Note app poem 3/11/22
Today I took shrooms and looked for the light
I watched the night stars twinkle in the distance while listening to Rod Lee and Backyard band
I thought of home
How I could make it a better place
of missing a place I don’t have roots in anymore
of being rootless
I created this track using site specific audio while at my residency at Mirante Xique Xique in Bahia, Brazil. I’ve been continually thinking about memory and how we can interact with the spirits of the past, so I visited an old mining site turned museum led by the great grandson of a former miner. I thought of how the enslaved would have wanted to be remembered and wanted to create a space for revenge, for liberation through sound. There is also this unexplained phenomena in Igatu, with this aurora borealis event that appears in the mountains for those lucky enough to witness, I didn’t get the opportunity to see, I waited about an hour for the lights but nothing happened. But I recorded a conversation with someone who experienced it and added it to the track. I like to think that the spirits of the garimpeiros are involved in some way or maybe it’s all a hoax for us visitors and estrangeiros, either way I’m here for it.
