Leila Buffa (Asunción, 1986) began her journey in ceramics by initially mastering the potter’s wheel and high temperatures — techniques of contemporary ceramics that she would soon transcend. Since 2016 she has been immersed in researching the modeling manual of her culture based on teachings from traditional master women from Paraguay and Latin America. In 2018, she began learning pre-Columbian techniques, specifically from master Azul Cian (Argentina), and since then she has dedicated herself to researching and transmitting these practices in a situated way, working only with resources from her surroundings.
In her studio, she teaches ancestral techniques of hand modeling and alternative firings with fire and low temperature. Leila is part of the “Trama Colectiva” collective of women ceramists from Asunción, dedicated to creating ways to sustain the craft in urban contexts through actions, workshops, exhibitions, and the generation of networks with rural ceramists from Paraguay.
